SUMMARY:Songkran - National Holiday
DESCRIPTION:The Songkran festival is the traditional Thai New Year’s Day and is celebrated from April 13th to April 15th. \nThe word Songkran is from the Sanskrit language and means the passage of the sun from one sign of the Zodiac to another. That means there are twelve Songkrans’ each year\, but the significance of this Songkran (sometimes called Major Songkran to distinguish it from the others) is when the sun enters the sign of Aries the Ram. The particular event was also closely related to the Vernal Equinox. \nThe most famous aspect of the Songkran celebrations is the throwing of water. The custom originates from spring cleaning aspect of Songkran. Part of the ritual was the cleaning of images of Buddha. Using the ‘blessed’ water that cleaned the images to soak other people is seen as a way of paying respect and bring good fortune. \nMost banks and government offices will be closed for the duration of the festival. Many currency exchange booths will remain open.

DESCRIPTION:Despite the great age of the events of Maka Bucha\, (Buddha was teaching over 2\,500 years ago) this day only became a holiday in Thailand in 1957. Prior to 1957\, the third lunar month was celebrated as a Buddhist Holy Day. \nIn Thailand\, the sale of alcohol is banned on religious holidays. This means bars and clubs are closed for the entire holiday. If Maka Bucha falls on a weekend\, a substitute holiday will be observed on the following Monday. Similar restrictions on the sale of alcohol will also apply on this day.

No walk-ins please*   \nHistorical Insight\nThe Discovery of North America (by Europeans) \nFor more than 1000 years ago a small group of Vikings landed on the rocky shores of New Foundland in North America. The chief of the group Leif Eriksen\, was the son of Erik Redbeard born in Norway and later moved to Iceland. \nIn USA they are usually celebrating this event on the 9 October as a holiday. In the Nordics it is rare to observe this occasion. As his birthplace Greenland is a part of the Danish Kingdom and the strait between Greenland and Canada is of not only high strategic interest but also of cultural and historical interest. Inspired by the latest Netflix series Viking Valhalla which are closer to the historical facts\, we feel this could be a great occasion to celebrate here in Thailand at the Eastern Seaboard at the Danish restaurant Jomtien Boathouse. We plan to have this as an annual event. \nThe happy ending of the most peaceful border dispute in the World between Denmark and Canada; sets an example for the other border conflicts. \nBoth Canada and Denmark cast the “historic” agreement as an example of how border disputes can be resolved peacefully\, without warfare or bitter legal wrangling\, at a time when the rules-based international order is under strain — a reference in part to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. \nFor some five decades\, Canada and Denmark have squabbled — mostly\, but not always\, politely — over the not-very-exciting Hans Island\, a 0.5-square-mile mass in the Kennedy Channel of the Nares Strait that’s home to neither vegetation nor wildlife. \nThe 14 June 2022 agreement ultimately resolved the dispute in a rather equitable manner. By this agreement Hans Island will be divided along a natural ridge with roughly 60% of the area being allocated to Denmark and the remainder to Canada. \nAfter signing the agreement to applause\, alcohol and notes were exchanged for the last time.

SUMMARY:Joint DTCC/Embassy Member Visit to the Danish Jewelry Factories in North Thailand
DESCRIPTION:Dear Members\, \nAs the COVID restrictions are being waived over time\, it has been possible to allocate the following dates for the joint DTCC/Danish Embassy visit to North Thailand which have been confirmed by all parties: \nThursday 1 September – 2 September 2022 \nThe chamber encourages members to register as early as possible as the factories have allowed this special visit on the condition that the number of visitors are limited under the prevailing situation in Thailand. \nThe Embassy will be available for business consultations at a dinner on Thursday 1 September at a restaurant at Mae Nam Ping River. The day after Friday 2 September the following factories will be visited: \nPANDORA Production Co. Ltd.\, Lamphun \nGeorg Jensen (Thailand) Ltd.\, Chiang Mai \nFrits Pedersen Production Ltd.\, Chiang Mai \nThe participants must arrange transport to Chiang Mai from Bangkok etc. by themselves. The chamber will inform of the hotel name as soon as it has been selected and booked. The DTCC office will arrange transport locally to the 3 factories. The hotel will be the meeting point for all participants where the van will pick us up. The tentative program for the visit is available here. \nThere will be a small surcharge of 500 THB per person for the arrangement of this trip. \nMembers who have registered with us earlier will have first rights.
