Danish nationals born outside Denmark may lose their Danish nationality on attaining the age of 22, unless they apply between the age of 20 and 22 to retain it.
It is important to apply for the retention of Danish citizenship before turning 22. There are also several documents required, including apostilles, which can be both challenging and costly to acquire. Moreover, if you do not apply for and receive your citizenship certificate before reaching the age of 22, you will not be able to renew your Danish passport after that age.
Madeleine Steenberg Williams, a student at CBS and former chairwoman of Danske Gymnasieelevers Sammenslutning, has come across the 22-year rule, which means she needs to apply to retain her Danish citizenship before turning 22.
